pacelenseBETAOverlays for iRacing

Questions and answers

Good to know

Here are answers to what you're most likely to need first. Can't find your question? Ask on Discord or drop me an email.

  1. 01

iRacing has to run in windowed or borderless mode: widgets can't be shown over a full-screen game. Change it in iRacing's graphics options and restart the sim.

By default the widgets start with the app and appear once you're in a car or watching a session. If you've turned off Switch the widgets on automatically at startup in Settings, press Run widgets on the app's home page.

  2. 02

On Discord, in the #bug-reports forum: start a topic for each bug so it doesn't get lost. If you'd rather not post in public, email support@pacelense.app.

Tell me what you were doing, which widget it was and which version you have. A screenshot helps a lot.

If the app closed or something went wrong, it wrote it down in the error log. In Settings, in the Where things are kept card, press Copy the error log and paste it into your message — the button only appears when there's something in the log. Your Windows user name doesn't go into the log, and the log goes nowhere unless you send it yourself.

The app sends nothing by itself — no crash reports, no usage stats — so the only way I can find out about a problem is from you.

  3. 03

Nothing. No account, no telemetry, no usage stats, no crash reports — I don't even know how many times you've opened the app.

Unless you decide otherwise, the app asks the internet only one thing: whether a new version is out. Like any website, the update server sees your address while it answers, but doesn't write it down. All that's counted is how many times each version was downloaded and updated: just numbers per day, with no addresses. If you turn on the Twitch chat widget, the app also connects to Twitch and to the emote services, only to show the chat. Nothing from them comes to me. More in the privacy policy.

  4. 04

No. Everything the app knows — your settings, your widget layout, fuel use per car and track — is kept on your computer, in %AppData%\Pacelense. Nothing is uploaded, synced or copied anywhere else.

This website sets no cookies, runs no analytics or visitor counters, and doesn't record its visitors' addresses.

  5. 05

Yes. Everything that's free today will stay free. If something is ever paid, it will be something new — never a thing you already have.

No trial, no license key, no account. If you'd like to support the project, there are donation links. Donations are voluntary and unlock nothing — everything is already yours.

  6. 06

By default, yes: the widgets start with the app, and it begins reading iRacing's data. If you turn off the automatic start, the app doesn't read iRacing until you press Run widgets.

Either way, it only reads what iRacing itself shares with programs like this one, and changes nothing in the sim.

  7. 07

Yes, that's what the padlock is for. It unlocks all the widgets — drag them and resize them — and a second press locks them again. The eye hides all widgets, the headset turns on spotter mode.

Each of these actions has a keyboard shortcut: you can change it in Settings, or put the action on a button on your wheel or button box. One button, one action: combinations are awkward to press on a wheel at speed.

  8. 08

It's the headset button on the standings and the relative — it turns the mode on in both at once. Both can then be scrolled, and rows open up with extra data by themselves.

  9. 09

The app checks for a new version by itself. When one is out, a window tells you once what's new in it, and a line with a button stays on the home page until you update. Nothing is downloaded or installed until you press Update now. Updating takes about a minute, and the app restarts by itself.

While iRacing is running, the app won't distract you with updates — it'll remind you after you leave.

It installs for your Windows user only, so it never asks for administrator rights. Every release is described on the What's new page, and if you skipped a few, the window shows what's new in each.

  10. 10

In plain files in %AppData%\Pacelense — the Open the folder button in Settings takes you there. settings.json, overlays.json and presets.json are your settings and your layout: plain text you can copy to another computer.

Every time a file is saved, the previous version stays beside it with .backup at the end — so even a reset to factory settings can be undone by hand.

  11. 11

By default it uses the same units as your iRacing. In Settings you can switch to km/h and °C or to mph and °F — speed and every temperature at once.

  12. 12

Yes. A widget remembers what it's anchored to — an edge of the screen, its middle or both edges — not a position in pixels. So the same layout fits the same way on 1920 × 1080 and on 3440 × 1440, and the app scales properly on high-density screens.

Tell me about it in the #suggestions forum on Discord — one topic per idea. I read every one. I can't promise to build any particular one, but your ideas help me decide what to make next.
